James first met Yvette a few years ago at a mutual friend's wedding. She was one of the lovely bridesmaids and incredibly fun to shoot with. In that time, Lasting Joys was established and we were lucky enough to be asked to shoot for her wedding in April! When we first met up with Yvette and Simon, we could see they were a friendly, laid-back couple who wanted to celebrate their wedding by simply enjoying time with close family and friends. On the day of the wedding, Simon and Yvette had to both get ready at their reception venue. Yvette made every effort to keep Simon from seeing her but they each couldn't resist sticky-beaking when they had the chance! Yvette made her way to the ceremony with her Dad and bridesmaid, her sister Fiona in their mum's VW Kombi van, complete with rust spot painted over in a different shade of green, computer speakers plugged into the radio and custom made seat covers :) We then made our way around Jackadder Lake with Fiona and Mark, Simon's brother and best man for some bridal photos. As the sun came down, the reception began. Yvette's grandparents, Pam and David set up their backyard to hold a reception for all their guests, they had even gone to all the trouble to plant extra flowers in the garden the fortnight before the wedding. We think they did a great job not only fitting in all the guests but creating a cosy setting for everyone to enjoy the wedding reception together. We ended the night with some sparkler photos, special thanks to Mark and Katie for helping us make these shots happen! Yvette and Simon, thank you for [...]
A few weeks ago, I got an email from Valencia, with excitement in her words, she told me that her sister's boyfriend was going to propose by the beach during the first week of May. After a few emails and a quick meeting, Lasting Joys were honoured with the privilege to capture a very special proposal. Fabien had decided to surprise his girlfriend of one and a half years, Esvi, by Trigg Beach in Perth at sunset. The only problem was that they both lived in Singapore! Making the most of Esvi's trip to Perth to visit Valencia, Fabien organised an elaborate plan to propose. It would, of course, involve a little bit of secret keeping to make it a complete surprise! As Esvi made her way to Perth with her mum and brother, she was under the impression that Fabien had gone to Hong Kong for a holiday. Little did she know he was in Perth and planning his proposal with the help of friends! And she said yes! Love the happiness on their faces here! So much joy... Then it was time to celebrate with family and the friends who helped pull it all off! Fabien and Esvi, you both are such lovely and warm people, it was such a privilege to be able to capture this the start of your new journey together. We wish you both the very best as you plan your wedding and your new life together as husband and wife! -Debbie and James
They say that home is where the heart is. And my, what joy must've filled Julie's heart as three of her four children came from all over the world to come back to their home in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. They had all come back to celebrate their dad Tim's 50th birthday with other family and lifelong friends. Daniel came back from Italy, Leigh from his army base in Townsville and Julian had travelled back from London. It's amazing to see how distance cannot break the bond between Julie, Tim and their four sons. Even though they have lived apart for so many years, you wouldn't have guessed it! The boys joked around while Julie commanded her troops into line for family photos. We started out in their backyard, in a treehouse Tim had built for the boys and moved out into the town of Woodanilling for the rest of photos. We then feasted on lamb on a spit (Tim's runaway lamb!), roast ham and good old country cooking as friends came to wish Tim a Happy 50th Birthday. Julie and Tim, you have a warm and wonderful family, thank you for having me there to capture this very rare and precious family occasion. Special thanks to Esther for assisting and helping share the driving for this event!
I got a text message from my friend Sonny last week saying that he needed help. The text message goes on to say that he’s planning to propose to his girlfriend and needed help from his friends to make it happen. Now having seen countless youtube videos of extremely elaborate and amazing proposals (not to mention some really bad/cheesy ones as well), I couldn’t wait to see what my friend had in mind. Well, I’m pleased to say he didn’t disappoint and even managed to pull it off in spectacular style! With the army of helpers and a slightly nervous but cool Sonny choreographing and directing, things were looking pretty good. After a few practice rounds to make sure it was perfect, then came the mad frantic rush from everyone into the house just as she pulls up to the front of the driveway earlier than expected! She was truly surprised to say the least. More importantly, at the end of it all, she said YES! Congratulations to the both of you and thanks for letting me capture such a memorable event!
Kid’s birthdays are hard work! Just the amount of time and work that goes into preparing all the yummy food and activities to keep the young ones happy and entertained, not to mention having to cater for the not so young ones (like the parents belonging to the kids and the parents friends). I don’t know how people do it! I’m sure it’s worth it though, when you see your child enjoying all the attention and love from family and close friends. Family and friends who will continue to be there and have a positive impact on the child as they grow up. They may not remember it, but when you look at the beaming faces of the two parents, you know they’re going to hear about it when they are older. Of course it helps when there are photos to go along with those stories. =)

They say that "friends are the family you choose for yourself" and this statement could not be truer for these two friends of mine. Chin Wee and Crystal have been a huge part of my life since I moved to Perth 8 years ago. I was there when they first started dating, I was there when they endured a long distance relationship, I was there when they got married and I was there when Crystal announced to close friends she was five weeks pregnant. It is amazing how time has flown since that exciting announcement and a few weeks ago, we celebrated the first birthday of their son, Ethan. Chin Wee and Crystal wanted us to commemorate the special occasion with a family photoshoot. We spent a lovely afternoon with them at a park nearby. We had such fun trying to make little Ethan smile for the camera, special thanks must be given to his Aunty Rebecca for her endless supplies of funny faces, high-pitched remarks and endless renditions of “Twinkle twinkle, little star”. Chin Wee and Crystal, we hope you will enjoy this collection of precious family moments and thank you for choosing us to capture them. Welcome to the Official Lasting Joys Blog! I can think of no better way to kick-start our blog than by sharing with you our very first wedding assignment, starring Rick and Tegan. Being the first wedding we would document as a team, we were extremely excited and nervous but so thankful for this lovely couple who picked us! Rick and Tegan are laid-back, genuinely kind, family-orientated people and their wedding day reflected this in so many ways. Having their ceremony and reception on Rick's family farm, Tegan arriving in her beloved Ford ute with her Dad driving, their siblings as their bridal party and the little photo of Tegan's beloved Pa on her bouquet were all very much a symbol of the kind of people they are. Tegan's parents had just celebrated their 30th anniversary only a few days before as well! They even mowed out the path through their crop fields, cut their own wheat for centre and aisle pieces and rolled out the hay bales in the days leading up to the wedding! It was such a unique thing for us city folk to see! After the ceremony, we moved to various places around the farm for bridal photos, to Rick's great grandfather's house, the shearing sheds before finishing off with sunset back at the ceremony venue. At the reception we chatted under the marquee Rick and his brother Kurt helped to set up the day before, powered by generators they had set up themselves as well! We laughed and teared up over the funny and heart-warming speeches shared by the Father of the Bride, Father of the Groom, Bridesmaids, Best Man and the Groom. We feasted on roast lamb from their farm with all [...]
